Spark 2014

Xavier Davis - piano
Matthew Parrish - bass
Gregory Hutchinson - drums
Passion, sincerity, energy, originality, courage, joy … these words all came to mind as I listened to the wonderfully engaging music on Spark, Marianne’s second release for Hipnotic Records. Self produced by Solivan, she clearly gave careful consideration to the musical territory she wanted to explore and the musicians she wanted to accompany her on this journey. The stellar trio of Xavier Davis (piano), Mathew Parrish (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums) are beautifully engaged and supportive throughout the entire session.

1st Time 2014

Matthew Parrish: acoustic bass
Aaron Graves: piano
Greg Riley: tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
E. Shawn Qaissaunee: piano, bass, acoustic guitar
It is one thing to have technique but quite another to possess musicality. These pieces swing with melodious energy echoing the sentiments of the past and the present. It would be easy to make comparisons to more recognized names but Reed's skillful band proves that jazz is an expressive art-form that still thrives heard in the drummer's spacious drum and percussion opening in "Let's Go" and the radiant tenor work of saxophonist Greg Riley in "For You, Joann" as well as Matthew Parrish's powerful bass solo in the soulful "Circle of Love."

“Making Memories” is about the enduring quest to create good memories in life. They don’t just happen, but we have to actively do something to ‘make’ them, as they enrich us forever. With music, we are fortunate to experience many uniquely inspired moments with people, audiences and musicians all over the world. Many of these experiences become unforgettable memories that continue to shape and change us. We will cherish these memories for the rest of our lives, as they become invaluable treasures to our heart and soul, making us grow, and remaining with us, always.

With all of those horns in the picture, and a large variety of different pairing possibilities at hand, Goehring's able to paint in diverse fashion from track to track during this nine-song program.

Arraial do Mundo 2012

Vana Gierig (piano)
Ricardo Vogt (guitar)
Matthew Parrish (bass)
Marcello Pellitteri (drums)
Ygor Saunier (drums)
Singer ‘Karine Aguiar’ is the ‘jewel’ in this crown of musicians. She hails from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, where she performs opera and ‘Jungle Jazz’ at the ‘Amazonas Opera House’. A good metaphor for Jungle Jazz is ‘jazz’ is the roots and the vine, while the ‘jungle’ is the leaves, flowers, and tendrils that make the plant unique. Those leaves and tendrils are true to Brazilian Amazonian rhythms and tone. Karine has helped spearhead Jungle Jazz’s popularity in Europe, where she now lives. She has played to a crowd of over 1,500 in Paris where she shared works from her CD, ‘Arraial do Mondo’, a recording with pianist, Vana Gierig. This CD was awarded a Brazilian equivalent of a Grammy in 2014 for ‘Best Brazilian Music Album’.

the Edinfred Files 2012

Matthew Parrish, bass

The Edenfred Files
The Edenfred Files almost sounds like something out of spy fiction, but its meaning is straightforward. In the summer of 2009, clarinetist Darryl Harper spent two weeks in an artist residency program called Edenfred, in Madison, Wisconsin. He used the time to work every day with the two contrasting lineups featured on this CD. What we’re hearing, then, is a précis of the creative adventure that Edenfred represented for all involved.

Oscar Perez-piano
Matthew Parrish-bass
Cecil Brooks III-drums
Indeed he is very much in his element this time around. Surrounded by an outstanding supportive and sensitive rhythm section of Oscar Perez-piano, Matthew Parrish-bass, Cecil Brooks III-drums, Nelson shines. Not only are they some of his closest friends, but he has worked with them in various capacities for several years. In high school he was introduced to Cecil Brooks, he worked with Matthew Parrish (Houston Person's bassist) when they were members of the Regina Carter Quintet & Sextet. Both Cecil and Matthew played on his first cd, "Testament: Live At Cecil's," for the past three years Oscar Perez has been working together in various groupings. Having had so much working experience contributes to the obvious synergy between them. Nelson says, "all of us have been on the bandstand with other groups and scenarios so we kind of have a sense of where each other is coming from."

mda: The album consists of 11 total tracks with a nice mixture of originals and standards. For a live recording, the engineering is quite good. I'll Be Seing You 2006

The violinist is in excellent form throughout, soaring with lyrical panache on the swing tunes, grinding away blissfully on the blues numbers, and revealing a tender, dulcet side on the ballads, with a somber take on the titular closing track. Despite the context, the album never drifts into maudlin territory. Simultaneously celebratory and reverent, I'll Be Seeing You is a fitting tribute to Grace Louise Carter.

Triophony 2005

Matthew Parrish, bass
Butch Reed, drums
Triphony
Triphony is the outgrowth of a run of performances by The Onus Trio at Ze Mean Bean Café in Baltimore. Within the confines of the cozy restaurant's tiny, railed bandstand, the trio began performing pieces from The Onus Quintet's working repertoire, but eventually developed new material of their own, a collection of new compositions along with a large body of free improvisations. Featuring compositions by Andy Jaffe, Stevie Wonder, and Phillip Braham; originals by Harper; and free improvisations by the trio, Triphony documents The Onus’s exploration from scripted to entirely spontaneous ventures.

nothingman 2004

Ben Schachter, reeds
Jef Lee Johnson, guitars
Matthew Parrish, bass
Craig McIver, drums
Schachter recasts John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" in a rapid 6/4 tempo that also jumps into, then out of, a few bars of 4/4 in each chorus, and Schachter negotiates the tune's dizzying chord progressions with an explosive tenor solo that grabs the listener from the outset and never lets go. By contrast, Schachter's tenor invests his original ballad "'He So Beautiful': Emmett Wallace" with convincing warmth. On "Everyone's A Genius," Schachter and Johnson intertwine contrapuntally over a swinging rhythm. Two tunes unfold with off-kilter, hip funk beats, and "New Toy" features the leader's fine soprano sax work. The rhythm section is fully together. They are at the service of the music. They go where the music needs to go. With Nothingman , Ben Schachter has produced a top-shelf CD of modern jazz.
Track Listing:
- Tribal Delusions,
- The Day The Happy Jazz Cried
- Moment's Notice
- "Think", She Said (Melancholy)
- Suddenly Sentient

Y'All Got It 2004

Jeff Ray, guitar
Matthew Parrish, bass
Butch Reed, drums
Harry Appelman, organ, piano
Y'All Got It
Y'All Got It pays loving tribute to the late composer Charlie Smalls, whose brainchild, the 1975 Tony Award-winning musical The Wiz, left an indelible mark on Harper when he saw the original Broadway production as child. Adopting the time-honored jazz tradition of borrowing pieces from musical theater, Harper presents sympathetic arrangements of eight tunes from The Wiz. While showcasing the beauty of the familiar melodies, Harper’s arrangements not only nurture nostalgia for the musical, but also present Smalls's compositions as viable and interesting vehicles for jazz improvisation. The album also includes a fitting ballad by noted jazz composer Andy Jaffe.

1. Be a Lion

5. If You Believe in Yourself

Reoccuring Dream 1999

Jeff Ray, guitar
Matthew Parrish, bass
Butch Reed, drums
Kyle Koehler, piano
Reoccurring Dream
"Reoccurring Dream" is The Onus Quintet's sophomore release. The recording finds the band, some three years after its inception, exhibiting the sort of vitality and cohesiveness that comes only with time. With the spontaneity and sensitivity of a veteran chamber ensemble, The Onus brings vividly to life a program of original compositions and creatively arranged standards that probe the mysterious, liquid realms of dreams. The album includes original compositions by Tony Haywood, bassist Matthew Parrish, guitarist Jeff Ray, and Harper. Harper also contributes arrangements of Mingus’s “Nostalgia in Time Square”, Cole Porter’s “Night and Day”, and Johnny Mercer’s “Autumn Leaves”.

the Onus 1997

Jeff Ray, guitar
Matthew Parrish, bass
Butch Reed, drums
Jason Shattil, piano
The Onus
This debut recording captures The Onus Quintet in its infancy. The CD’s program consists of three original compositions by Harper, his inventive arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Too High”, and a piece co-written by Harper and then Onus manager Tony Haywood. The album also bears witness to Harper’s early experiments with various instrument combinations within the quintet.
Track Listing
1. DePriest
2. Too High
3. Nina
4. How Now
5. Bliss
6. Inner Urge

Deja Vu 1995

Orrin Evans on piano
Matthew Parrish on bass
Byron Landham on drums
Great playing abounds on this early session. Its interest is heightened by the appearance of several pieces that Evans would go on to record on his later Criss Cross albums: "Explain It to Me," "Dorm Life," "Big Jimmy," and Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning." The opening "I Want to Be Happy," played in a straight-ahead, lilting 3/4, is quite different from the daring treatment the standard would receive five or so years later on Evans' Listen to the Band. Previously unheard Evans originals also appear, such as "Monroe" and "5-4-94," the latter a solo piano feature. The showstopper is an extended, medium-swing reading of Cole Porter's "I Love You." Now that Evans has established himself as a pianist to be reckoned with, Déjà Vu provides a timely look back.

This CD is also dedicated to the memory of both – Manfred Knoop, brilliant studio engineer,

A Reflected Journey is a quintet date, but it doesn't have a quintet date feel about it. The man of the hour—trumpeter Tom Goehring—doubles on flugelhorn, and his front line partner, the ever engaging and well-rounded Roger Rosenberg, covers baritone saxophone, soprano saxophone and bass clarinet. With all of those horns in the picture, and a large variety of different pairing possibilities at hand, Goehring's able to paint in diverse fashion from track to track during this nine-song program.

Tenor for Two 2011

- Everyone's A Genius
- "He So Beautiful": Emmett Wallace

Track Listing
1. Be a Lion
2. He's the Wizard
3. Soon As I Get Home
4. Slide Some Oil to Me
5. If You Believe in Yourself
6. I Was Born the Day Before Yesterday

8. Y'All Got It
9. If I Had a Dream
